What is a medium when it comes to physics?

A medium, in relation to physics, is any substance that carries a wave, or is where a wave can travel through.

There are two ways to transport energy.

Electromagnetic waves are waves that dont require a medium. An example of an electromagnetic wave is light.

Mechanical waves are waves that require a medium like water or air. an example of a mechanical wave is sound.
